Welcoming our freshers

18 September 2013

Stephen DixonIt's that time of year again - a new start for our new alumni and a new start for our freshers. The turnaround seems extraordinarily fast but maybe that's me getting older!

Starting university is exciting and it seems like you have a lifetime ahead of you before even thinking about jobs, mortgages and pensions. As alumni we know that's not true - painfully aware of how quickly those valuable and influential three years fly by.

Thankfully as alumni we can offer some help to undergraduates. Your support can help improve their learning environment. Mentoring schemes are in place which means we can offer real time support. Even just staying in touch with your Alumni Association helps us to show how well we do as a place of advanced learning, encouraging great staff to work here and inspiring our current students.

We all have the potential to inspire in different ways, some small, some large, and all are equally valuable. As freshers have their welcome talk this year I hope they'll be inspired by the words of last year’s Alumnus of the Year Matt Wallace, who raised thousands for Cancer Research UK and improved awareness of their work.

It's a great three years ahead for those freshers and I know you'll hope, as I do, that it leads to a lifetime of satisfaction in personally rewarding jobs.

All best wishes,

Stephen
