Chua Siow Leng

HonMSc in recognition of his contribution to surveying education and his role in improving the capability of the construction industry in his home country.

Mr Chua Siow Leng is one of the most respected figures in the Malaysian and international construction industry. His award reflects the way his leadership has served as an inspiration to young people seeking to achieve senior positions in government and the private sector. It also highlights his work in assisting Malaysian educational establishments to develop high-quality degree programmes.

Executive Director of WCT Engineering, Chua Siow Leng has been responsible for several landmark projects. These include two of the world’s most impressive Formula 1 tracks at Sepang, Malaysia, and Bahrain which won excellence awards at the CIDB Malaysia Construction Industry Awards. WCT was selected as the Builder of the Year in 2002.

Chua Siow Leng’s links with the UK date back to 1969 when he won a scholarship to read Quantity Surveying at what was then Leeds Polytechnic. He went on to serve the Malaysia Government for nine years and, in 1987, took a Postgraduate Diploma in Law at City University, London, under a Chevening Scholarship. His reputation then propelled him to serve a five-year tenure as CEO of Percon Corporation Bhd from 1989. He took up his role at WCT in 1996.

Chua Siow Leng has held various senior honorary institutional and professional posts – including being elected President of the Institution of Surveyors Malaysia in 1990. In addition, his commitment to the international surveying community is significant: the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) in the UK appointed him Chair of its Partnership and Accreditation Board for the Asia Pacific region in 2002. Since July he has also chaired the RICS International Education Standards Board which will oversee accreditation of university courses globally.

He has been particularly supportive of NTU’s links with the Far East, especially in establishing a joint MSc with the Construction Industry Development Board Malaysia.
