Graphic Design graduate success at the Design Bridge x Guardian Student Awards 2020

2 February 2021

Alumni Eve Wallis and Alice Stone won the competition, with fellow NTU graduate Daniel Swainson receiving runner up.

BA Hons Graphic Design graduates Eve Wallis and Alice Stone took home the prestigious award for their inventive campaign ‘Train Like an Olympian’. Their brief was to ‘design the decade we deserve’ by selecting an article from the first issue of The Guardian newspaper in 2020 and then selecting a brand from the given list of 14, delivering a creative response.

Eve and Alice have each won £400, a trophy and a paid placement with Design Bridge’s London Studio, which will take place remotely due to the current COVID-19 restrictions.

Eve and Alice chose an article about the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and interpreted it for the brand Durex, cleverly referring to “the most popular sport in the world” in their designs. The judges commented: “The design execution is bold and simple and flexes the brand’s equities in a playful way that feels very intuitive. Eve and Alice have come up with an incredibly powerful and inclusive concept and they have executed it brilliantly – these two are ones to watch.”

We spoke to Eve about her win: “Me and Alice are both over the moon to have won this award. It is amazing to see NTU Graphic Design take the two top spots, with Dan Swainson being the runner up!

Our project, Train Like an Olympian, was inspired by the Tokyo 2020 Games, which was cancelled due to a world pandemic. Sex is the world’s most popular sport and ‘Train Like an Olympian’ challenges the consumer to get fit with Durex in time for Tokyo 2021, whilst advertising safe sex.
