Bernadette's work against Coronavirus

8 July 2020

Alumna Bernadette Walsh (BSc Hons Biomedical Science, 2014) has been active in the fight against Coronavirus within the NHS.

She works as a Specialist Biomedical Scientist in the Pathology team at the Royal Derby Hospital (RDH) and has told us about her role in the pandemic.

“In the Biochemistry lab at RDH, our lab team have recently been involved with Anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibody testing on the Roche Cobas 8000 analysers. This involved rapid verification of the new test to ascertain performance acceptability in-house. The test is now live and being rolled out to healthcare staff and we are processing in excess of 600 samples per day.”

“We also perform urgent blood tests to monitor Covid positive patients and new admissions in the hospital. We test their renal, liver function, cardiac markers alongside many other analytes and alert clinicians with abnormal results that need acting on - operating 24/7.”

“It is a challenging yet very engaging and rewarding role often in the background of the NHS.”

We want to thank Bernadette, and everyone at RDH, for their amazing work supporting Covid patients
