Events for you on the horizon

30 January 2014

RunNTU 2014Stephen DixonIf you’re suffering from post-Christmas and New Year blues it’s the perfect time to get things in the diary to look forward to.

Thankfully the NTU Alumni team have been really busy sorting out masses of events and activities for you to come along to.

First of all a reminder that our “Since 1843: In The Making” exhibition of alumni work is on campus until Friday 7 February.

We have a special reception later in February for Law alumni in Hong Kong. Sadly I haven’t been invited to go out for this one, but for those of you in the area, what a great way to meet up and remember your time in Nottingham. It’s free, but you have to register online in advance.

You may well be aware of the work of the John van Geest Cancer Research Centre based at the Clifton site, and the amazing work they’re doing to crack the cancer code. You can help raise money in a variety of ways.

The first option is “A Night in the West End” concert. The London Philharmonic Orchestra are performing at the Royal Concert Hall with one of my favourite stars, Kerry Ellis. Kerry is a stalwart of the West End and has recently been performing alongside the legend that is Queen guitarist Dr Brian May. It really will be a night to remember! And there’s a special discount for alumni too.

If you fancy raising money AND raising your fitness levels, why not join RunNTU for the John van Geest Cancer Research Centre. This is a 5km event for the serious competitors, alongside a fun run event for families. It’s not until 26 April, so plenty of time to work up to it! A great way to get sponsorship and help beat cancer.

You can’t think back to your student days without remembering ending a weekend with a Climax. In my time, “Climax” at the Students’ Union didn’t exist, but I have my own memories… However, if you want to relive your student days (and nights) how about Climax Reunited on 29 March. A chance to relive the past, whilst enjoying the brand new Students’ Union. Have a blast and know that you’re also helping the John van Geest Cancer Research Centre AND Students’ Union activities.

Finally, make some time in your diary for a lecture. There’s something really special about the Distinguished Lecture Series and I try to get along to as many as I can. They’re a great way to hear the views of some of the best practitioners in their field but WITHOUT the prospect of an essay or exam to do at the end of it all! They are free to attend, so soak up the knowledge. There’s even a free drinks reception afterwards if you fancy a mingle… Someone should have thought of that when I was a student… All the details of the next two lectures are online along with details of how to book your place.

Do try to get one of these events in your diary. There are some great opportunities to get back on campus and welcomed back into university life. If you’ve not been back for a while, you’ll be amazed at just how vibrant NTU has become!
