Top of the Class!

29 March 2017

NTU alumnus Nic Williams (BA Hons Education 2009) has scooped a top award at the Into Film Awards 2017.

Nic, who works at Blue Bell Hill Primary School in Nottingham, won in the Teacher of the Year category, for his use of film as a key part of students’ learning. One of his initiatives was the introduction of a film club, putting on screenings for the school's children, which has helped give them a "critical eye".

He has also held film education training events for Nottingham City and Nottingham County Council schools, to highlight the power of film as an educational tool.

Nic said: "At Blue Bell Hill we use film to encourage a love of learning – whether that's through film club, writing reviews, watching and discussing a film in the classroom to support literacy, or through our family learning..  We’ve seen a real difference – if you can get a child to have a love of learning then everything grows.  Using film to have that love of learning is the key.”

Nic was presented with the award by film director Amma Asante.  He told the Alumni Relations team “It was great to receive the award, it may have my name on it, but it represents all the children, families and staff at Blue Bell for all that we do to make it a great place. I am really proud of the award and the into Film programme we have developed.”
