Alumni pick up a piccolo for Beth

Second year Biomedical Sciences student, Beth Martin, is enjoying playing a brand new piccolo thanks to generous donations from alumni.
Despite her lectures being on Clifton campus, Beth chooses to live close to the City site for easy access to the Music Centre where she takes lessons and practices with the choir, wind band and big band. Now she is branching out with use of this brand new piccolo.
Beth from Bristol started playing the flute at a young age, and is trained to Grade 8. She said: “Music is a huge part of my life. I knew I wanted to play the flute but it nearly didn’t happen because, as a youngster, my arms were a bit too short to play one! Luckily we were able to buy a curved head-joint which helped a lot as I was starting out.
“I’m excited to have use of this professional instrument as it means I can play piccolo solos in the wind band and it will really help my confidence. I want to thank donors for this opportunity – it was an unexpected reward.”
Beth will not be the only person to benefit from the piccolo - after Beth graduates the instrument will remain the property of NTU for future students to enjoy.
She said: “I would encourage other current students to stop and think about how their opportunities at NTU have been funded. I’ve been so lucky and would want others to have the same support in the future.”
Beth will be performing at NTU Music’s Concert Band and Brass Band Evening on Thursday 23 February 2017 from 7.30 pm in the Newton building. Find out more.
