Joining Instructions for the Sunset Run in support of the John van Geest Cancer Research Centre

Location and Parking

The Clifton campus is located just off the A453, Clifton Lane. If you have a sat nav, please use the postcode NG11 8NS. Guidance on how to get to Clifton Campus and a campus map is available at  https://www.ntu.ac.uk/about-us/visit-us/maps-and-locations

Free parking facilities will be provided on the University campus for participants and supporters. Park in the University Student Car Park accessible from the North entrance to the campus from A453 (entrance closest to the city).

Once parked, please follow the signs to the Lee Westwood Sports Centre. Volunteers will be on hand to point you in the right direction.

Registration and t-shirt collection

All runners must register on the day, please ensure you do as if you do not register you won’t be able to take part.

When you arrive at the Lee Westwood Sports Centre, please confirm your entry for the race at the registration desk by 18:00 at the latest. Registration will be open from 16:45 onwards. You will be able to pick up your race number (and souvenir t-shirt if you have ordered one).

All runners must be at the start line for 18:10, 20 minutes prior to the race start for a safety briefing. Signs and volunteers will show you the way from the Lee Westwood Sports Centre to the start line.

The 5k race will start first, followed by the 1.5k 30 seconds later.

Changing Facilities and Storage

If you require changing facilities these are available in the changing block in the Lee Westwood Sports Centre. These will be open before and after the run. There are lockers available in the Lee Westwood Sports Centre, although if you want to secure these, you will need to bring a padlock. Other, open storage is also available.

Please do not bring any valuables as the University accepts no liability for loss or damage to possessions.

Refreshments

Water and fruit will be provided at the finish area for runners for free, and we will also be providing a barbecue for runners and their supporters, which will offer beef and veggie burgers for £3, payable by cash or card.

Fancy Dress

Runners are welcome to take part in fancy dress. Please just ensure the outfit won’t be offensive or dangerous to anyone else!

Please do post on social media on the day – we love seeing your pictures! You’ll find us on Facebook and Twitter if you search for ‘vanGeestCancer’. Please do use the hashtag #SunsetRun19 as well.

Timing 

The race will be hand timed, and your race numbers will be recorded as you walk through a funnel just after the finish line. We will give you instructions on the day, but it's important to please remain in the same order you crossed the finish line and walk single file through the funnel.

Photography

Please be aware that we will be taking photos at the event. If you do not wish to be photographed please make a volunteer aware of this at registration.

Do…

  • Bear in mind that parts of the course are off-road and may get wet and muddy, so wear appropriate clothing.
  • Follow all instructions from the race marshals.
  • Keep to the left on the course where appropriate.
  • Remember that the 5k race will be started at 18.30 with a count down from 3 which will be followed closely by the same for the fun run.
  • Have respect for other users of the route as the area is popular with walkers, cyclists, runners and horse riders.
  • Cross the public highway with due regard to other road users
  • Follow the course route. If you get into difficulty contact the nearest marshal.
  • Follow the finish officials’ instructions
  • Be aware that officials will not be able to advise on times of individuals during the race.
  • Tidy up after yourself and endeavour to leave the campus and surrounding area litter free.
  • Have fun!

Please do not…

  • Use personal music players and head phones
  • Wear fancy dress which could be considered offensive or dangerous
  • Obstruct Marshals or route markers or warm down on the route of the course.
