Mr Ian McLaren QC

Hon LLD to mark his contribution to the development of the legal community in Nottingham as well as his role in the success of NTU’s Bar Vocational Course (BVC).

Mr McLaren has practised in Nottingham throughout his career at the Bar and is Head of Ropewalk Chambers, which has a national reputation for excellence. He has appeared in every court in the jurisdiction and has been involved in innumerable reported cases, including some that have changed the law. Among high-profile cases, he was instructed on behalf of the National Union of Mineworkers to deal with the Nottinghamshire pneumoconiosis claims.

Mr McLaren became a Queen’s Counsel and Assistant Recorder in 1993. Three years later he was made a Recorder and he sits in the County Court in civil and family law cases. In 2004 he was elected a Master of the Bench of Gray’s Inn.

He has played a crucial role in the development of ht BVC, offering careers advice to students; delivering annual lectures; judging and sponsoring the annual Ropewalk Moot for students; and overseeing an annual opinion writing competition.
