Eleanor Sharpston QC

Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws (LLD) in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the legal profession and to the conduct of justice.

 

Eleanor Sharpston is one of eight Advocates-General at the European Court of Justice who give independent legal opinion on cases before they go before the judges for a full hearing. She was appointed in 2006 with extensive working knowledge of the law across the continent, and a command of several languages.

After graduating from King's College, Cambridge in 1977, she had a teaching and research post at Oxford University, before becoming a barrister. She has since continued to combine practice at the Bar, specialising in European Union law and the European Court of Human Rights, with an academic career in London and Cambridge.  She has made a distinguished contribution to both spheres of law.

Advocate General Sharpston is also a member of the Irish Bar and the Gibraltar Bar.
