Professor wins top Italian award for gambling research

23 March 2017

Dr Mark Griffiths, Distinguished Professor of Behavioural Addiction is set to receive the Italian Giuseppe Imbucci Award for 2018, an award recognised by the Italian President.

The award is presented annually by the International Observatory on Gaming, an Italian scientific gambling organisation, and is named after the first scientist in Italy to give academic credibility to studies on gaming and gambling.

The award, which is recognition for Mark’s body of gambling research, will be presented in November at the University of Salerno.

Mark said: "I'm absolutely delighted to win this latest award. We never go into a research career expecting to win awards for our work but it’s always great to receive such recognition. This is the 18th award I've received and it feels just as good as the first."

Mark is one of the UK’s best-known psychologists and first came to prominence for his highly influential and impactful research on gambling. He is now known for his research on behavioural addictions to gaming and gambling, videogame playing, the internet, exercise, sex and work and he has published over 630 peer-reviewed journal articles, five books, more than 150 book chapters and over 1,500 other articles.

Mark has influenced gambling law and policy, and has advised governments all over the world on gaming regulation and health support programmes, as well as the gaming industry more generally on support for responsible gambling and harm minimisation.

In January, Mark was one of three professors at NTU to be promoted to the position of Distinguished Professor in recognition of his sustained, world-leading excellence in his field.
