Alumni Fellows inspire students at our first Creative Industries Expo

9 May 2018

Creative Industries ExpoThe end of Term 2 saw Nottingham Trent University host the first ever Creative Industries Expo, under the title ‘LEAP: Your Creative Future Awaits’.

Organised by the School of Art and Design, but open to all students, the fair, held in Newton on City Campus, was the first of its kind, but will now become an annual fixture in the NTU creative calendar.

The Expo, which played host to industry representatives, all offering graduate roles, was attended by hundreds of students who had the chance to meet a diverse range of creative employers, and attend industry lead talks. The striking visual identity for
the event was created by MA Graphic Design students.

This was also the first chance our new Art and Design Alumni Fellows have had to be involved in a large event. Launched in the School of Art and Design in January, our Alumni Fellows volunteer their time to inspire and engage students. There are now over 30 Alumni Fellows in the School, six of whom dedicated their afternoon to attending the Expo and taking part in a Q&A panel to talk to students about their own creative career journeys.

Students had the chance to meet, and engage with, Pat Sampson (BA Hons Photography 2013), Maelle Daub-Laurent (MA Illustration 2017), Cathy Bellamy (MA Graphic Design 2017), Janet Wootton (MA Fine Art 2012), Rachel Butlin (BA Hons Decorative Arts 2015) and Sian Hallam-Davies (BA Hons Photography as Arts Practice 2016).

The Fellows described their own diverse career paths, and the students asked insightful questions. Students picked up a number of useful tips from the panel including the importance of networking. Students also learnt that working in the creative industries is worth all the hard work, in order to be able to do something you love. The panel concluded there is a strong chance that your career path will not be exactly as you predict it to be.

Both students and Alumni Fellows enjoyed the panel, and being part of the wider Expo, which ended with a networking event for industry representatives, staff, and alumni.

The 2019 Creative Industries Expo (which will be held on Tuesday 2 April) will build on the success of this years’ and will offer more chances for alumni to get involved.
