Sharon at Pride of BritainSharon Gray, head teacher at Netherfield Primary School, has been named Teacher of the Year at the Annual Pride of Britain Awards.

Sharon (BEd Hons Education 1991) was praised for her work at the school, including a social enterprise project which provides support for vulnerable children once they have left the school.

She said: "My background is working in special schools and with children with severe social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. I have met so many children who feel the system has failed them and heads who exclude children. At Netherfield we are bucking the trend that white working class boys always under-achieve. Our pupils are actually showing outstanding progress and this award is a reflection of the work of our whole community, not just my work."

She added: "The award ceremony was so much fun. I met some really inspirational people and David Cameron said he would come and visit our school, so we are looking forward to that!”

Year Five pupil Max Armstrong, 10, said: "Ms Gray has done so much for our school and developed it in so many ways. We are so proud of her!"
