Employability mentoring

Could you devote some time to sharing your professional experience and expertise with a student?

The Employability Mentoring Programme is designed to improve the employability prospects of current NTU students. The development of a mentoring relationship with an experienced professional, who works in the student's sector of interest, will provide valuable insights into the industry.

As a mentor you will be matched to a current second year NTU student, and be expected to build a relationship with your mentee which encourages their growth. By sharing your professional knowledge and experience and offering advice and guidance, you will create a climate which encourages them to develop their ideas and pursue their goals.

The role of a mentor
As a mentor, you will fulfil several roles which include a motivator, resource, supporter and coach. You will respond consistently, openly and honestly to your mentee providing sensitive challenges where appropriate. You will have the ability to convey your belief and confidence in your mentee.

Skills and attributes required from you as a mentor:

  • Good communication skills and the ability to develop a supportive relationship
  • The ability to provide feedback in a constructive manner
  • The ability to commit time and effort to the mentoring relationship
  • A willingness to be open and share experiences and advice of the sector

Benefits for the mentor:
  • It's your chance to share your knowledge and experience in the sector
  • This scheme develops confident and ambitious graduates equipped to shape society
  • You will achieve job satisfaction in helping others to improve their employability and life prospects
  • You can reflect on your own professional development through the exchange of ideas and insights
  • It will raise the profile of your organisation with a network of fellow professionals and NTU's future graduates
  • You will gain experience and further develop your own mentoring and coaching skills
  • You will remain involved with Nottingham Trent University and help us support our future alumni
