Alumni get first official glimpse of Newton & Arkwright

Midsummer Celebration 2010

The Newton and Arkwright buildings are now open for business with students and staff enjoying the brand new inspirational learning, teaching and working environment.

We were delighted to be able to show off these newly transformed buildings to alumni at a special reception hosted by Chancellor Sir Michael Parkinson on 24 June 2010.

The event was held in the Benefactors’ Courtyard on a bright sunny evening and was an opportunity for former students to see this magnificent redevelopment in advance of its official reopening later in the year.  Guests had the chance to take official tours and heard how the state-of-the-art facilities and services will impact on the student learning experience.

Alumnus Philip Boyes (HND Civil Engineering Studies 1996 & BEng Civil Engineering 1998) said:  “It’s a fantastic building.  It’s good to see Newton looking so good 12 years after my graduation”.

Alumni bid farewell to York House
17/06/2010
York House Farewell

After more than 30 years, NTU has vacated its space in York House in favour of the new state-of-the-art facilities now available across the rest of the campus.  Some former students had fond memories of their time in York House and asked the Alumni Association to arrange one last get-together in the building.  They joined us for a special farewell in the third floor coffee bar on Friday 11 June 2010.

As well as meeting up with friends and lecturers, they had the chance to look around their old teaching rooms.  They also shared stories about the York House fire in the late 1970s, the windows which sometimes fell out onto the street when they opened, and watching the fabulous sunsets over the city from the top floor windows.

Alumni Officer Clare Oswin said:  “We didn’t realise how many people had such fond memories of this funny old building!  It was great to see how enthusiastic our guests were to see their old teaching space one last time.”

Fifteen years since they were last together at NTU a small group of BEng Mechanical and Electrical 1994 classmates met up in Nottingham recently. They enjoyed a weekend of catching up and visiting old haunts.

BABM Reunion

Nottingham Business School celebrated a special anniversary for one of its most high-profile courses – James Bond style.

The BA (Hons) in Business Management (In-company) is ten years old this year and former students, employers and staff got together at the Belgrave Rooms, Nottingham Conference and Banqueting Centre, to mark the occasion.

The guests enjoyed a three course dinner, live entertainment and - in keeping with the 007 lifestyle - a flutter in the casino.

Friends celebrate 10 years on
13/10/2008

Brackenhurst Hall

Thirteen friends travelled from all over the UK to attend a reunion weekend in Nottingham to celebrate 10 years since graduation.

The weekend started with a trip down memory lane taking in a tour of the university including the Students’ Union and Sandby and Hampden Halls of Residence.

The next day, after lunch in town, the group went to The Orange Tree (formerly Russells) where they shared funny stories from their time at university. Organisers had produced a memory board and an album of photographs for the event.  They included some old photographs as well as images and messages from friends who could not attend.  Later they had a quiz and presented each other with awards like “worst dressed person”, “most popular” and “most transformed person”.  Winners were presented with a medal and certificate.  After a lovely meal at La Tasca they hit the town for old times’ sake!

The reunion ended on the Sunday after a bit of shopping.  Organiser Shweta Kapoor (Environment and Human Sciences 1998) said:  “We had such a memorable weekend.  Our reunion was full of fun - we certainly made some lifelong friends during our time at Nottingham Trent.  We would like to thank university’s Alumni Office and Union of Students for making our stay so special.”

Over 300 former students help celebrate Brackenhurst’s 60th anniversary
13/10/2008

Brackenhurst Hall

Over 300 guests gathered on Brackenhurst campus on Saturday 14 June to celebrate the 60th year since the first students began their studies at Brackenhurst.

Held in a marquee on the main lawn, guests included current staff, former staff and former students from the 1950s to 2007.

The afternoon began with some guests opting for a tour of the campus.  Later the Vice-Chancellor hosted a special reception, followed by a barbecue and dancing.

As well as celebrating the 60th year, a fundraising campaign was launched.  Since 1999 Brackenhurst has benefited from around £20 million of investment, primarily from NottinghamTrentUniversity, the Higher Education Funding Council and the East Midlands Development Agency.  Major improvements have been achieved across the campus but much still remains to do.

Thanks to NTU alumna Hazel Blears MP, we were able to secure one of London’s most iconic venues, the Terrace Marquee in the House of Commons.

The event was a great opportunity to meet other alumni and to hear more about your university. To complement the magnificent setting on the River Thames, canapés and refreshments were served.

Fresh fields for BOSA tour
08/05/2008

As part of the BOSA 50th anniversary reunion tour, 29 former Brackenhurst students went on a special journey together to Western Canada.

They flew to Vancouver in June 2007 and began their trip with a sightseeing tour of the city and visits to a cranberry growing concern, dairy farm and fruit-growing farm.

They then joined the Gold Leaf Rocky Mountaineer for an interesting journey through the magnificent scenery of the Canadian Rockies taking in Salmon Arm, the Kootenay Central Mountain Range - including dinner at Eagles Eye, North America’s highest restaurant - and Banff National Park.

Visits during the tour included Pincher Creek, a trout hatchery that bred pedigree mosquitoes as well as trout, a beef ranch and the historic Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump. They also visited local family farms before heading to Calgary where they watched the Stampede.

Rosalyn Sneath (Rural Economy 1957) said: "It was a memorable tour and enjoyed by all – we missed all the wet weather back home in England too!"

Rain is no dampener for class of '82
08/05/2008

A wet July weekend in Nottingham isn’t everyone’s idea of a good time, but for a group of friends celebrating 25 years since completing their Economics studies, it didn’t spoil the fun. A meal in the Lace Market bar Bluu marked a diversion from "Memory Lane" because that part of town was not frequented much by students in the early 1980s, but all agreed it was a splendid night spent in great company. One of the attendees, Tim Cobb, said: "Circumstances transpired to keep several of the gang from attending this year, but they won’t be so lucky next time!"

Five years on and back in Business
08/05/2008

The Business Studies class of 2002 held their five-year reunion in Nottingham on Saturday 7 April 2007. The celebration, which was a huge success and attracted more than 50 people, began down at the Waterfront, went on to the Pitcher and Piano bar and continued on to the Lizard Lounge. Organiser James Burwood said: "It was fantastic to catch up with old friends who I hadn't seen in five years and it was as if nothing had changed. It was great fun and I am looking forward to organising something again next summer."

Brackenhurst bunch celebrate anniversary year
08/05/2008

The Brackenhurst class of 1976-77 also celebrated their 30th anniversary with a reunion on Saturday 16 June. They enjoyed a tour of Brackenhurst Farm and the School of Animal, Rural and Environmental Sciences before heading to a local pub for a buffet supper.

Organiser Jill Asher (Agriculture 1977) said: "It was great to be together again after all these years. However, we were unable to trace a few of our classmates, so I would like to urge all former Brackenhurst students to check their address books and share information so that we can regain contact for future events."

If you can help Jill trace any Brackenhurst graduates from 1976-77, please contact her via the Alumni Office on +44 (0)115 848 8777 or at alumni@ntu.ac.uk
